Der nördlichste Hegauvulkan ist der Höwenegg. Sein Basaltvorkommen wurde noch bis 1979 für den Straßenbau abgebaut und auf Loren nach Immendingen verfrachtet, von wo es durch die Eisenbahn weiter transportiert wurde. Dabei wurden die beiden noch existierenden Burgenreste weitestgehend zerstört. Bedeutsam waren dagegen zahlreiche Fossilienfunde sowie die Entdeckung des Urpferdchens Hipparion.
