The Haßloch Bird Park provides a home for a rich variety of native and exotic birds.
On June 21, 1953, the "Association for the Protection and Care of Native and Foreign Birds e.V." was founded by sixteen bird enthusiasts from Haßloch.
In November, a first bird show was held in the Nagel Hall, showcasing an astonishing variety of birds. Over the next two years, further exhibitions took place with ultimately more than 400 animals from over 120 species in their own cages and a large aviary. These well-organized exhibitions were a huge success and were accordingly recognized in specialized journals.
In early 1955, discussions were held with the Haßloch municipal administration to acquire a suitable area on the edge of the forest for bird conservation, with nesting aids in summer and feed in winter. The municipality entrusted the association with the area known as the fish pond in Haßloch at that time. Thousands of work hours were invested to clean up the two ponds, which had often been used as trash dumping sites. The small pond was fenced, and the first animals of the bird park, a pair of white swans, found a home there.
In 1955, the association joined the "Association of German Forest Bird Lovers" and the "German Federation for Bird Protection."
The work in the park was advanced, with the large pond fenced and populated with several species of geese and ducks. In spring 1959, the association was presented to the public, and its members received great praise from many quarters for their work.
In early 1963, the construction of a dedicated clubhouse and restaurant began, which was realized in less than two years with little money, but a lot of courage and drive.
By the end of the 1960s, a barn, workshop, feeding kitchen, and a youth room for the new youth group were established.
In April 1997, a new parakeet exhibit was created with six outdoor aviaries having heated indoor areas.
In summer 1999, the ibis exhibit was inaugurated (ibises, storks, and herons) with large free-flight areas.
The stork enclosure was also renewed, and a new toilet facility was constructed.
In 2010, two aviaries were destroyed by falling trees. The renovation of the aviaries was completed in 2011 and 2012. In summer 2012, the raven aviary was renovated, and after the renovation, a pair of owls moved into the aviary.
A comprehensive renovation of the apartment, restaurant, and cellar rooms was implemented in 2013 over a period of eight weeks.
In over 60 years, the association has created a park area where both humans and animals can feel comfortable. The park is open year-round from morning until dusk. Admission is free, and the park area is accessible. You can reach the restaurant by phone at 06324/929707 or 9113008.
