The groundwater from this tomb was collected and used in the above, south-east castle probably dating from the 10th century as the water supply for humans and animals.
In the following centuries, the spring served as a welcome refreshment for shepherds, forest workers, refugees, but also for riffraff who shunned the light. The well takes its name from the Hansl Hube Farm in Grottham. More than 230 years ago, the former Hansl Huber farmer took his own life on a fir tree right next to the well. This gruesome tale gave rise to the superstition to avoid the place, because according to legend it is haunted. Whereas the forest well used to be maintained by local residents, the Birnbach Tourist Office restored this ancient and unique forest well in 1975 and 1986. The Hansl Huber farm has also produced two Bad Birnbach locals known in earlier times: F.X. Unertl (the former member of the Bundestag) and the mother of today's Wasner landlady Hansi were brothers and sisters who came from the farm.
