Der Schwarze Grat liegt auf der Grenze zwischen Bayern (Eschachtal) und Baden-Württemberg (Bolsternang). Der ist 1.118 m üNN. Die Grenze zwischen den beiden Bundesländern verläuft knapp 300 m südöstlich des Berggipfels. Der erste Aussichtsturm wurde bereits 1878 errichtet und 1906 vom Schwäbischen Alpenverein durch den hölzernen Aussichtsturm ersetzt.
