GeoPunkt Schachen-Breccie
Die rund 480.000 Jahre alte Schachen-Breccie ist verfestigtes Steinschlagmaterial.
Die Schachen-Breccie weist eckige Bruchstücke unterschiedlicher Größe. Sie ist oberhalb des Schachen zwischen ca. 1950 – 1850 m entlang des Wegs sichtbar. Zwischen den aussschließlich aus Wettersteinkalk bestehenden Bruchstücken findet man nur wenig Bindemittel vor. Es handelt sich um eine sogenannte Hangschutt-Breccie, d. h. das Material wurde durch Steinschlag transportiert und anschließend verfestigt. Vermutlich ist sie rund 480.000 Jahre alt (Günz-, Mindel-Interglazial). Der größte Teil der Schuttablagerungen wurde bereits wieder erodiert, so dass hier nur noch Reste vorkommen.
Breccie ist ein Sedimentgestein, das überwiegend aus eckig-kantigen Bruchstücken („Komponenten“) vom gleichen oder von unterschiedlichen Gesteinen besteht. Im Gegensatz dazu enthält ein Konglomerat überwiegend gerundete Bestandteile. Beide Gesteinsarten werden durch natürlichen Zement wie Kalk, Quarz, Eisenhydroxid zusammen gehalten.
