Ein idyllischer Wasserfall am Stadteingang von Laufen
Dort, wo die Birs über eine harte Kalkbank hinunterfällt, liess sich der Flussverkehr am besten kontrollieren; hier konnten auch die Abgaben eingezogen werden. Eine Wasserfassung erlaubte es, an diesem günstigen Ort den Stadtbach in die Stadt, die im 13. Jahrhundert erbaut wurde und 1295 das Stadtrecht erhielt, zu führen; einige Mühlen nutzten das Gefälle des Wasserfalls ebenfalls. Auch den Namen «Laufen» verdankt die neue Stadt ihrem Wasserfall (vgl. z.B. Laufen am Rheinfall, Laufen an der Salzach, Laufenburg am Rhein und Lauffen am Neckar). Denn früher bedeutete «Laufen» so viel wie «Wasserfall».
