Water tower in Varel

Das zuvor in Zisternen und Flachbrunnen gewonnene Wasser genügte Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts nicht mehr den Ansprüchen der Stadt, darum errichtete man einen Wasserturm mit Wasserwerk. Seit seiner Errichtung im Jahre 1914 versorgt er die Stadt mit frischem Trinkwasser, Erweiterungen aus den Jahren 1968 und 1982 halten den Wasserdruck und die Qualität weiter aufrecht. Den Wasser-turm verbindet ein Netz von 62 Kilometern Rohrleitung mit etwa 3600 Wasserhausanschlüssen im alten Stadtgebiet. Mit seinen 54 m ist er das höchste Gebäude Varels.
Das an den Wasserturm angebaute Wohngebäude dient dem Wasserwerksmeister als Unterkunft. Bis die Stadt Varel 1956 die technische und kaufmännische Betriebsführung auf die EWE AG übertrug, wurde die Wasserversorgung Varels als städtischer Eigenbetrieb geführt. Die Plattform des Wasserturms kann täglich zwischen 8 und 17 Uhr (bzw. 16 Uhr im Winter) besichtigt werden.
