The forest devil
The "Waldteufelseiche" (forest devil oak) at the foot of the Urenkopf is a reminder of the Haslach hatter Xaver Kilgus. Whenever a festival was celebrated in the small town of Hasle, the hatter would climb the huge oak tree as nimbly as a devil and hoist the Baden flag at the very top of the tree so that everyone could recognise from afar that a festival was being celebrated in the small town. The hatter soon became known among the people as the "forest devil". One day, however, he slipped on the wet branches and fell into the depths, where he was found and pronounced dead. He is said to have been carried into the town on a stretcher while singing psalms for the dead, waking up on the way and saying that he was not yet ready to die. After a long period of infirmity, the hatter Xaver Kilgus died as a result of this fatal fall.
