Motorcyclists and car drivers already get wet eyes at the sight of the road - almost endless curve fun, spectacular views and clearly less traffic than on the much used alpine passes. But Romanian roads don't have the best reputation, centimetre deep potholes can occur when at least expected. And on some sections of the pass road, caution and high concentration are indeed required. In some places you will find only provisionally repaired holes or milled asphalt with a lot of rolling chippings in the curves. For the shock absorbers of cars this is a challenge, for motorcyclists it is dangerous - the view of the fantastic mountain world should rather be let roam in a parking place at the roadside.
However, other sections are in no way inferior to the well-kept Alpine passes and you can enjoy the driving fun extensively. On the north side there is the Cabana Bâlea Cascada, a hut at the waterfall. On the pass summit at the two mountain hotels Cabana Paltinu and Cabana Bâlea Lac a stopover is obligatory, the mountain lake is picturesquely situated. At the very top we continue through an unlit tunnel under the main ridge of the Carpathians - just follow the light at the end of the tunnel! On the south side, the road follows the bank of the Vidraru reservoir and also crosses its dam wall.
The drive over the pass road should be done with some planning and the weather forecast should be observed in advance. In bad weather the trip can be very dangerous, in wet conditions the asphalt is very slippery, visibility may be very poor and heavy rainfall will wash boulders onto the road.
The road is closed between the end of October and the beginning of June, but snowfall can also occur during the other months. In this case you should not cross the pass.
