Where the border between the dioceses of Strasbourg and Constance once ran, a mighty, overhanging boulder rises out of the forest, looking like a kind of "pulpit", which is now considered a striking vantage point. This rock is popularly known as the "Devil's Pulpit".

The road underneath the rock formation has served as a connection between Swabia and the Rhine Valley (Strasburg) since ancient times and the following popular legend arose in connection with it:

One day a carter from Swabia travelled this road with his horse and cart and immediately after crossing the diocesan border - now on Strasburg territory - the devil appeared to him below the rock and promised him all the goods in the world if he would later sell his soul to him. This was a tempting offer and the two came to an agreement, i.e. if the devil found the carter on Strasbourg territory, he would be allowed to seize the carter's soul.

Time passed and one day the carter came back through the valley in his vehicle, this time on his way home towards Swabia. He had probably long since forgotten about his former agreement with the devil, when suddenly the sinister journeyman was back and demanded what had been agreed back then. But the carter, not embarrassed, spurred the horses on with all haste and chased the astonished devil away, quickly crossing the diocesan border at the "Gschwailoch" and he was already on the territory of Constance, where the devil could no longer harm him according to the agreement. However, the devil is said to have retreated into the forest, cursing, and at some point the rock formation was referred to as the "devil's pulpit".
