Braunkohletagebau & Kraftwerk
In gigantischen Tagebauen wird die notwendige Kohle für die Verstromung im Kraftwerk Jänschwalde gefördert. Der Tagebau wurde in den 1970er Jahren unmittelbar nördlich der Eisenbahntrasse Cottbus-Forst aufgeschlossen und „wandert“ weiter in Richtung Guben. Aussichtspunkte entlang der Dörfer Neuendorf, Heinersbrück, Grötsch, Jänschwalde Ost bis hin nach Grießen geben faszinierende Ausblicke auf diese Landschaftsform auf Zeit. Raststätten laden am jeweiligen Aussichtspunkt zum Verweilen ein. Informationstafeln erklären anschaulich die langjährige Tagebauentwicklung und die zukünftige Rekultivierung dieser Flächen.
Im naheliegenden Braunkohlekraftwerk Jänschwalde wird die Kohle aus dem Tagebau in Strom umgewandelt. Die Kohle gelangt über Bandanlagen zur Verladung in die Waggons der werkseigenen Eisenbahn und wird per Zug ins Kraftwerk gebracht. Bei Volllast kann das Kraftwerk bis zu 80.000 Tonnen pro Tag verarbeiten. Die ca. 120 Meter hohen Kühltürme des Kraftwerks und deren gewaltige Wasserdampfwolken sind kilometerweit zu sehen. Am Fuße dieser Türme züchten Peitzer Fischer in großen Becken im aufwendig gefilterten Warmwasser jährlich bis zu 200 Tonnen Fisch (Jungtiere) wie z.B. Aale, Welse oder Forellen.
