Sophienruhe

In times long past, this place was a popular viewpoint for the people of Grünstadt. A certain Sophia Dittmar was also drawn here time and again to her favorite spot above the rooftops of the city. After she passed away far too early, her husband, Heinrich Dittmar, who was then the rector of the Grünstadt Latin school, had this memorial stone erected in her honor. With the inscription "Sophienruhe 1825". Since then, this beautiful viewpoint has borne that name.

The road that leads from here downhill into the city is called ‘Taubengartenhohl’, suggesting that it may have been an old Roman road. The Romans buried their deceased outside the settlements in the so-called columbaria, which translates to pigeon gardens.
