There is a historic triangulation column on the Opitzhöhe (367 meters above sea level) north-east of Tharandt. This is a 2nd order station of the "Royal Saxon Triangulation". The state survey carried out on the territory of the Kingdom of Saxony between 1862 and 1890 created a trigonometric network that was one of the most closely meshed and advanced in Europe at the time.
Geologically speaking, the Opitzhöhe is the north-easternmost elevation in the Ore Mountains. Here, the Freiberg gray gneiss borders on the Rotliegende. However, these rocks are already overlain by the Plänersandstein.
From the height, there is an excellent view of the edge of the Ore Mountains - with Quohrener Kipse, Wilisch and the striking Luchberg. With good visibility, you can also see the Geising and the Kahleberg as well as the table mountains of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
There has also been a wind turbine on the Opitzhöhe since 1995.
