Dornachbrugg verdankt seinen Namen dem Bau der Brücke über die Birs. Während Jahrhunderten befand sich hier die einzige Flussüberquerung zwischen Angenstein und Münchenstein. Bereits auf dem grossen Schlachtholzschnitt (um 1500) ist eine Brücke zu sehen, die dann während der Schlacht zerstört wurde. Solothurn liess den wichtigen Flussübergang sofort wieder erstellen. 1501 baute Hans Gibelin beide «land vestinen» und ein steinernes Joch, samt einem rundbogigen Brückentor und einem zweistöckigen Turm mit Zeltdach und – nicht zu übersehen – dem solothurnischen Hoheitszeichen. Der Oberbau bestand bis zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts aus Holz. 1612/13 wurde die baufällige, gedeckte Holzbrücke durch eine steinerne mit drei Bogen ersetzt. 1735 erlaubte der Rat von Solothurn dem Arlesheimer Domkaplan Kehl die Aufstellung des Brückenheiligen Nepomuk an der Stelle, wo ehemals ein schlichtes Kreuz gestanden hatte.
