Lifinar Maisäss

Am 25. April im Jahr 1800 bäckt man in einem Haus in Partenen hinten Brot. Ein Funke entweicht, entzündet ein Feuer, dieses greift über die trockenen Schindeldächer hinweg rasend schnell um sich, der Föhnsturm an diesem Tag tut sein Übriges. Bald steht Partenen in Flammen, die meisten Häuser mitsamt Schule und Pfarrhaus verbrennen. Der Föhnsturm, so wird berichtet, soll an diesem Tag so heftig gewesen sein, dass die brennenden Schindeln bis auf den Maisäss Lifinar ob Gaschurn gelangt sind.

Die sonnengebräunten, ebenfalls leicht entzündbaren Hütten von Lifinar ob Gaschurn blieben damals verschont. Dass hier aber noch andere Gefahren drohten, darauf weist bereits der Name des Maisäss hin. Das aus dem Rätoromanischen stammende Wort «Lifinar» bedeutet soviel wie «Lawinenzug».

Viele solcher rätoromanischen Begriffe existieren noch im Montafon. Und sie stehen meist in engem Zusammenhang mit der Natur. Orte benannte man meist nach der Beschaffenheit des Bodens oder nach besonderen Geländeformen. Der Begriff «Maisäss» hingegen dürfte zu Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts mit den Walsern ins Tal gelangt sein, belegt ist das Wort im Vorarlberg um 1380 als «maygen gesäß». Dieser Begriff zeigt wiederum an, wann auf den Maiensässen Hochbetrieb herrschte. Im Mai eben, wenn man die Nutztiere auf dieser Nutzungsstufe zwischen rund 1200 Meter und 1600 Meter über Meer grasen lies, bevor man sie auf die Alp hinauftrieb.

Hochbetrieb gibts auf den Maisässen heute aber meist auch zu anderen Jahreszeiten; viele Maisässe werden als Ferienhäuser genutzt.
