Das Johanniterkloster ist nicht mehr vorhanden. Steine wurden für andere Bauvorhaben verwendet.
Das Kloster in Mu(h)de war ein Johanniterkloster, auch "Kommende" genannt. Der Johanniterorden ist ein um 1100 in Jerusalem (urspr. zur Pflege kranker Pilger) gegründeter geistlicher Ritterorden, d.h. eine Gemeinschaft geistlicher Krieger zur Bekämpfung von Glaubensfeinden. Die Mitglieder dieses Ordens waren z.Zt. der Kreuzzüge sowohl dem mönchischen Gelübde als auch dem ritterlichen Waffendienst verpflichtet. Der Johanniterorden führte während der der Kreuzzüge einen Glaubenskrieg gegen den Islam. Nach der Beendigung wurden zunehmend ander Aufgaben, wie die Pflege kranker Pesonen wahrgenommen. Um 1000 wird das Kloster urkundlich erwähnt als "Latha muthon ad ostium Ledae" (in dem Güter- und Heberegister der Abtei "Werden") ; "nächste urkundliche Erwähnung 1319 dann als "lethe muda" Auszug aus:
"Geschichte der ehemaligen Klöster in der Provinz Ostfriesland" von Hemmo Suur, Amtmann zu Norden, Emden 1838 Standortbeschreibung:
"Dieses lag weiter gen Westen auf der Landspitze, welche die Vereinigung der Leda mit der Ems bildet, im Süden der ersten, gegen Leerort über." Auszug aus:
"Ostfriesland und Friesland ,E. Rack, Rautenberg,1989 S.74/75 "...in eine Biegung des Emsdeiches...Mu(h)de heißt Mündung. Es war also das Kloster an der Mündung der Leda. Leider ist auch keine Ansicht von dem Kloster in Muhde vorhanden, so dass nur geschätzt werden kann, wie das Kloster einmal ausgesehen haben mag.Wahrscheinlich haben die Kapelle, mit dem Altar noch Osten und eine 3-flügelige Klausur ein Rechteck gebildet, so dass ein Innenhof entstand, in dem das Klosterleben stattfand. Außerhalb dieses Rechteckes haben dann die Wirtschaftsgebäude gestanden. Eine Ansicht des Klosters Dünebroek bei Wymeer vermittelt einen Eindruck, wie es in Muhde ausgesehen haben könnte.
