The Karlstein is a rock formation made of granite blocks in the district of Niederwasser, which lies almost 1,000 metres above sea level.
It is located directly on the Westweg from Pforzheim to Basel and offers a special view to the east, north and south.
Until 1805, the Karlstein marked a quadrangle where the states of Baden and Württemberg and the Fürstenberg and Vorderösterreich possessions met.
The rock used to be called Hauenstein. It was renamed after Duke Carl Eugen von Württemberg climbed the peak on 23 July 1770.
