Der Felsen wurde dem Jenaer Theologen Johann Jakob Griesbach gewidmet. Bei seinen Besuchen in Blankenburg suchte Griesbach den Felsen gern auf. In 453 m ü. NN gestattet der Griesbachfelsen einen Blick in das tief unten liegende Schwarzatal, sowie einen Panoramablick zu den umliegenden Bergen.
