Garneratal

Das Garneratal, das sich von Gaschurn aus über gut 10 Kilometer bis zu den 2883 Meter hohen Plattenspitzen an der Grenze zum Prättigau erstreckt, erscheint so urtümlich wie vor Jahrhunderten. Skilifte und Touristenbusse jedenfalls sucht man vergeblich. Dafür trifft man im Sommer gut 35 Kühe an, etwa 120 Rinder und 900 Schafe an. Letztere findet man sogar bis auf eine Höhe von gut 2500 Metern.

Noch etwas höher oben fanden sich im Jahr 1909 ein englischer Maler und ein österreichischer Augenarzt wieder. Edward Theodore Compton und Karl Blodig standen gemeinsam auf den Garneraspitzen, auf über 2850 Metern. Und die beiden Freunde gelten auch als Erstbesteiger der Valgraggestürme, die sich im Osten über dem hinteren Garneratal erheben. Gleich nebenan, etwas südlich der Valgraggestürme, hat Karl Blodig, der nach eigenen Angaben bis 1911 als erster Mensch alle Viertausender der Alpen erklommen hat, ein Denkmal erhalten; denn nach ihm benannten Blodigturm.

Sein malender Freund, Edward Theodore Compton, stand dem Augenarzt alpinistisch aber nicht nach. 300 bedeutende Alpengipfel hat er erklommen, 27 Erstbesteigungen werden ihm zugeschrieben. Häufig war der Engländer aber auch mit seiner Staffelei anzutreffen, 1700 Bergmotive hat er festgehalten. Die Werke bilden aufgrund ihrer topografischen Genauigkeit ein wertvolles Bildarchiv zu den Alpen im 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhundert. Darin prominent vertreten sind auch das Montafon und die Silvretta, auch die Tübinger Hütte und das Garneratal tauchen mehrmals auf.

Jahrzehnte später wird das Garneratal erneut bildlich festgehalten, diesmal aber in bewegten Bildern. 1994 erscheint eine Filmcrew, die hier Robert Schneiders Besteller-Roman «Schlafes Bruder» verfilmt. Das Dorf, das im Film zu sehen ist, sucht man im Garneratal allerdings vergeblich. Es handelte sich um ein temporäres Kulissendorf. Aufgebaut war das Dorf aber aus echten Montafoner Materialien: Regisseur Joseph Vilsmaier hatte im ganzen Montafon verwitterte Holzhäuser aufgekauft, zerlegt und im Garneratal neu zusammensetzen lassen.
