Situated on the "Dreimarkstein-Dobel" section of the famous Pforzheim-Basel West Trail, the sea of rocks with the "Champagne Stones" invites hikers to marvel.
The boulders used to be called "crystal sandstones" because of their strikingly bright glitter. An old geological map of Dobel gave them the proud name "champagne stones". For a time, the stones were used by the people of Dobel as a quarry. Due to their high resistance, they were often used to make millstones.
Origin
Geologically speaking, the Dobler Höhenrücken is part of the "Grinde", as the often unforested, partly boggy red sandstone ridges are popularly known. The upper source horizon of the Middle Bunter Sandstone is made up of mostly coarse-grained sandstones, in which larger boulders are embedded. Exposed by erosion, this formation in particular tends to fall apart into conspicuous blocks, which then appear as a more or less large sea of rocks in the landscape.
