Elbe-Saale confluence: Two become one
It’s the second longest tributary of the River Elbe, winding its way to its big sister in wide loops. After 413 kilometres, the River Saale flows into the Elbe south of Barby.
Halloren salt from Halle used to be transferred to larger Elbe barges here at Saalhorn, the headland between the two rivers. In the 19th century, the volume of shipments declined and the loading point was abandoned. Nature has long since reclaimed the land, and the headland now forms the core zone of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. Silted-up channel beds of the “Alte Saale”, an old arm of the river, have formed a series of small lakes, and the alluvial floodplain is home to numerous protected species.
The Saalhorn spit itself is not accessible, but you can reach the confluence of the two rivers on the left bank of the Saale. Here you will find a red stamp box for “Salzland cultural stamps” – you can buy the corresponding booklet at tourist information centres and branches of the Salzlandsparkasse savings bank.
You can also get your booklet stamped on the three ferries in the area known as the “Elbe-Saale-Winkel”, on the stamp card for the three Ferry Tour. The 25-kilometre circular trail connects the Elbe Cycle Route (Elberadweg) and Saale Cycle Path (Saaleradweg).
