Am Rand des Südharzes erhebt sich über der Goldenen Aue der Höhenzug des Kyffhäusers. Oben auf dem Berg steht das Kyffhäuser-Denkmal, dass an Friedrich I. Barbarossa erinnert. Der legendäre Kaiser hatte hier eine Burg, berühmter jedoch ist der Mythos, dass er im Inneren des Berges, in der Barbarossa-Höhle, auf seine Wiederkehr warte...

Im Inneren des Kyffhäuserberges schläft seit Jahrhunderten, umgeben von seinen Getreuen, Kaiser Friedrich I., genannt Barbarossa. Man sagt, er werde eines Tages wieder erwachen, um das Reich zu retten und zu neuer Herrlichkeit zu führen. Sein berühmter roter Bart wächst während dieser Zeit immer weiter und hat längst den steinernen Tisch durchdrungen, auf den Friedrich Rotbart mit seiner Hand den Kopf stützt. Einmal erwachte er und fragte einen gerade anwesenden Schäfer ob die alten Raben noch um den Berg flögen. Als dieser das bejahte, seufzte der Kaiser und sagte: „So muss ich noch hundert Jahre länger schlafen.“ Irgendwann aber, wenn die Raben nicht mehr um den Kyffhäuser kreisen, wird er wieder aus dem Berg treten, seinen Schild an einen dürren Baum hängen und dieser wird alsbald ergrünen und bessere Zeiten ankünden.
