Alipaşa Çarşısı is a historic Ottoman covered bazaar in the centre of Edirne. Originally designed as part of a caravanserai complex, it later developed into a traditional marketplace. Today it remains one of the city’s most important commercial and cultural landmarks.
Alipaşa Çarşısı, also known as the Ali Paşa Bazaar, is a covered Ottoman market located in the historic Kaleiçi district of Edirne. It was commissioned by the Ottoman statesman Semiz Ali Paşa in the 16th century as part of a larger charitable foundation (waqf) system. Although initially planned as a caravanserai, the structure evolved into a long covered bazaar, reflecting the commercial needs of the growing city along the trade routes between Istanbul and the Balkans.
The bazaar extends for approximately 300 metres and contains over 100 small shops arranged along a vaulted corridor. Traditionally, the rental income from these shops was used to support charitable institutions, including a mosque in Babaeski. Architecturally, the bazaar reflects classical Ottoman commercial design, with a linear layout, stone construction, and repetitive shop units under a continuous arched roof. Today, it continues to function as a lively marketplace selling textiles, souvenirs, and local goods, maintaining its role as a central part of Edirne’s urban life.
