Reuss Valley

The upper Reuss valley stretches from Erstfeld to Göschenen. Here a world is revealed that is characterised by majestic mountain peaks and extensive alpine areas, whereby these areas are mainly located in the side valleys such as the Erstfeldertal, the Maderanertal, the Meiental and the Göscheneralptal. In contrast to other parts of the country, where livestock farming is often carried out by the owners, communal management of the alps is a tradition in the Uri highlands. Employed shepherds take care of the various animals, and in autumn the alpine cheese produced in summer is divided up based on the amount of milk milked.

In the lower Reuss valley, on the other hand, where about 80 percent of Uri's population lives, is the economic and cultural centre of the canton. Here you will find the town of Altdorf, which with almost 10,000 inhabitants is not only the main town of Uri but also its largest municipality. Other important municipalities such as Schattdorf, Seedorf and Flüelen contribute to the lively character of this region.

The alpine areas of the lower Reuss Valley extend mainly in the Isental, in the heights above Sisikon and above Attinghausen. A remarkable feature of Uri's Reuss Valley is that some alps even extend beyond the natural watershed. This is particularly evident in the area beyond the Surenen Pass, where the alpine area of Uri extends almost as far as Engelberg.

The Reuss Valley in Uri is thus a place where the impressive mountain world, traditional alpine farming and lively community life merge in a fascinating way. The diversity of this valley makes it a delightful destination for all those who want to experience Switzerland's unique culture and nature.
