´The Window into the History´ - Synagogue in Martin
Projekt „Okno do histórie“ – synagóga v Martine vznikol za účelom priblíženia histórie mesta Martin svojim obyvateľom ako aj jeho návštevníkom. Okno do histórie vám poskytuje pohľad na to, čo sa plynutím času zmenilo, dokonca až úplne zmizlo. Turista má možnosť jediným pohľadom cez priehľadný grafický panel vidieť líniové kresby vytvárajúce chýbajúcu budovu bývalej synagógy v Martine, a tým získať obraz o tejto už žiaľ neexistujúcej unikátnej stavbe.
Synagóga až do vypuknutia II. svetovej vojny pokojne slúžila svojmu účelu. Pozoruhodné bolo, že pri synagóge bol aj židovský cintorín. Obvykle bývali židovské cintoríny zriaďované za obcou či mestom, vzdialené od synagóg. V roku 1942 väčšinu židov deportoval režim vojnového Slovenského štátu do nacistických vyhladzovacích táborov a to najmä na území Generálneho gubernátu ( časť niekdajšieho Poľska). Napriek tomu, zostalo z viac ako 400 židov v Martine na začiatku vojny žiť v meste niekoľko židovských rodín, ktoré prežili až do vypuknutia SNP. Následne tých, ktorí sa nestihli ukryť, nacisti pochytali, deportovali do táborov smrti alebo nemilosrdne zlikvidovali na Slovensku. Podobne ako väčšina synagóg na Slovensku aj martinská prežila vojnu, avšak po roku 1945 už nemala pre koho slúžiť. Priestor určený na modlitby nahradila sušiareň a sklad obilia. Budova bola využívaná na nový nedôstojný účel, ale nikto ju neudržiaval, a tak chradla. Nakoniec bola ošarpaná a zničená stavba v polovici sedemdesiatych rokov asanovaná, aj keď sa vtedy našli organizácie i jednotlivci, ktorí sa ju pokúsili zachrániť. Dnes sa tu nenachádza ani pamätná tabuľa, len zastávka autobusu. Martinčania na ňu spomínajú ako na niečo záhadné, ale skvostné, s krásnymi liatinovými stĺpmi v interiéri či farebnými sklíčkami na oknách.
