The Kilimanjaro massif is located in the northeastern United Republic of Tanzania. With a height of 5895 m, it is the highest mountain in Africa and thus part of the Seven Summits. It would be correct to call the Kilimanjaro a massif. The highest peak in Africa is actually the Kibo, which is just one part of the Kilimanjaro.
On October 5, 1889, Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller reached the summit. The highest point was named "Kaiser Wilhelm peak" at first, because Tanzania was under German domination in this era. Today, they speak of Uhuru Peak.

Next to their success, the two men realized that the mountain was in fact a volcano. They stood on the edge of a crater, which today has a diameter of almost 2.5 km. We know today, that the crater was created in an eruption, when a large part of the mountain was destroyed. The summit of the primeval Kilimanjaro is estimated at about 11,000 m. The outburst was so powerful that not only half of the mountain was blown off, but the dust of the explosion must have darkened the earth for years to come. Lava rock of Kilimanjaro can still be found thousands of kilometers away from the outbreak.

Up to 25,000 tourists try climbing the Kilimanjaro each year, which requires a high degree of endurance and height tolerance. Most climb the so-called "Marangu Route" to the highest point. Some other, much nicer and, above all, less crowded routes lead to the summit as well, such as the "Machame Route". In all cases, an ascent takes between three and seven days and takes place in stages with the active assistance of local porters and guides.
