Die Waidringer Steinplatte ist kein gewöhnlicher Felsen. Denn wo sich vor 200 Millionen Jahren ein riesiges Korallenmeer befand, liegt heute das einzige Trockenriff Europas.
Der Gipfel der Steinplatte liegt auf 1869 m. Ihre etwa 150 m hohen Steilwände verdankt die Steinplatte dieser ganz besonderen Entstehungsgeschichte. Noch heute zeugen zahlreiche versteinerte Schnecken und Farne von diesem Urmeer. Besondere Qualität hat dieses Gestein für Kletterer und Klettersteiggeher.
Wer mit der Gondelbahn von Waidring auffährt, findet nach kürzester Zeit von über 100 Sportkletterrouten und mehreren versicherten Steigen wie dem Wieslochsteig, dem Gamssteig, dem Schuastagangl und dem Knieschladerer. Wer das erste Mal Kletterluft schnuppert, ist im Wintergarten und an den leichten Routen St. Johanner Minipalven und Palven gut aufgehoben.
