The Steinplatte is Europe's only dry reef. It was formed in the Triassic period from a sea of corals; the corals are fossilized in the limestone at the summit. The Triassic Park in Kammerköhr is dedicated to this (June to Oct.). Thanks to well-developed paths and alpine trails, the Steinplatte offers a wide range of hiking opportunities.
From the parking lot, take the asphalt road up to the Stallenalm. Turn right here and follow the wide hiking trail to a fork. The upper route on the left leads to the via ferrata and Zettensteig (variant 4), the lower route on the right to the Grünwaldalm. From here, the route climbs mostly moderately over forest and meadow terrain, first southwards, then eastwards to a fork in the path at the start of an alpine plateau (boulder block). Turn left here and continue through a labyrinth of rocks to the Wieslochsteig, which leads up to a saddle. From there, the easier route leads north and west through a pit to a fork in a saddle and left to the two summit crosses on the Steinplatte. Some mountain experience is required on the path that branches off to the left shortly before the saddle, which leads through a steep gully secured with a wire rope and finally over some small mountain pine heads to the summit.
