Sein markantes Aussehen hat er ebendiesem Gestein zu verdanken, einem recht instabilen Konglomerat, das sich sehr stark den Einflüssen der Witterung beugt. Doch selbst im Vergleich zu seinen Nebengipfeln Gelchenwanger Kopf und Hochgrat ist der Gipfel des Rindalphorns ungewöhnlich schmal und zerklüftet.
Für Wanderer, die auf der Nagelflugkette unterwegs sind, ist der Ostgrat des Rindalphorns die einzige Stelle, wo der Wanderweg unterbrochen wurde. Auch die Südseite kann nur über eine Kletterpartie bestiegen werden. Der einzige ausgeschriebene Wanderweg führt über den Westgrat zum Gipfelkreuz.
Unterhalb des Gipfels lag früher die Obere Rindalpe, die vermutlich namensgebend für den Gipfel war. Diese ist allerdings mittlerweile verfallen. Erhalten sind bis heute die Untere Rindalpe, die Gündelalpe, die Groppachalpe und die Untergelchenwangalpe.
