The majestic Höfats, a proud 2259 metre high mountain in the Allgäu Alps, rises near Oberstdorf and impresses with its steep flanks and striking lines. Together with the Rauheck and other peaks, it forms a natural border between the Oytal and Dietersbachtal valleys. Its four peaks of almost equal height give it a unique silhouette, which in the past has been compared to a Gothic cathedral.
The Höfats is divided into two pairs of peaks, connected by the imposing Höfatsscharte. There are smaller notches between the peaks, while the ridge extends from the Rauheck to the north-west.
The Höfatsnadel is particularly striking, with its ridge running in different directions from the east summit. The south-east face of the eastern summit and an insignificant ridge to the south-west offer challenging routes for mountaineers. However, the Höfats is not only a paradise for adventurers, but also for nature lovers. The diversity of the flora, including gentian, auricula and the rare edelweiss, makes it a unique ecological hotspot.
The mountaineering history of the Höfats spans several eras, from the first ascents to spectacular winter ascents and the rediscovery by sport climbers. But this beauty also harbours dangers. The steep flanks and changing weather conditions make the climb challenging and risky. For decades, mountaineers have been swept off their feet by overconfidence or the unpredictable conditions, giving the Höfats a reputation for danger.
Paraglider pilots are also attracted by the challenge, but only the most experienced of them dare to attempt this flight. The strong thermals and steep grassy slopes require the utmost concentration and skill. Despite the risks, the Höfats remains a fascinating destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike, a place that deserves respect and admiration in equal measure.
