Nach allen Richtungen hin sendet er ausgeprägte Grate. Die Nordseite ist im gesamten Bereich vergletschert und bildet eine markante, bis zu 60 Grad geneigte, 300 Meter hohe Wand. Die „Hochfeiler Eiswand“ ist eine der bekanntesten Touren des klassischen Alpinismus.
Erstmals bestiegen wurde der Berg am 24. Juli 1865 durch den österreichischen Alpinisten Paul Grohmann und die Bergführer Georg Samer und Peter Fuchs. Sie waren die ersten, denen sich der atemberaubende Ausblick auf das tief darunter liegende Zillertal, den Hochferner, den Hohen Weißzint und die Pfunderer Berge bot.
