Fulling barrels were also used in the Kirner leather industry for many years.
Fulling barrels were also used in the Kirner leather industry for many years. In the rotating barrels, the skins were tumbled for dehairing, tanned and, after further work steps, processed into finished leather and dyed. While fulling barrels were first used in industrial leather production, the skins were tanned in tanning pits lined with oak beams and planks in the centuries before. Several tan pits were found here during the construction of the fire station.
