Potsdamer Platz is only a stone's throw from the Brandenburg Gate. It is a traffic junction between various city highways which makes it already very busy. Even before the Second World War, Potsdamer Platz was the center of Berlin. The first German traffic lights were located here and the cultural elite met in the cafés, bars and restaurants.
With the construction of the Berlin Wall, Potsdamer Platz lost its importance, because the Wall ran directly across the square and the surrounding area was restricted. After reunification, the square was then revived, and during the 1990s it became "Europe's largest construction site.” Today it is a place of architectural highlights.
