It is located about halfway between the Isartor and Karlstor, in the center of the Salzhandelsstrasse, which runs right through Munich's center. The square is about 100 m long and 50 m wide. It is bordered on its north side by the New City Hall and the east by the Old City Hall. To the west is the Kaufinger Strasse, the most famous shopping mile in Munich city center.
The carillon in the New Town Hall is particularly well-known and popular, and many people gather because of it every day on the Marienplatz. The 32 lovingly crafted copper figures turn in circles around to a catchy melody, performing a medieval tournament scene. In the lower part, figures perform the so-called "Schäfflertanz," reminiscing the plague epidemic of 1515.
