Das Reiterstandbild auf dem außerhalb der Stadtmauer gelegenen Platzes zeigt den einflussreichen Fürsten Leopold.

Um den Leopoldplatz entstand unter Fürst Karl von 1835 bis1840 das Regierungs- und Verwaltungszentrum -zunächst des Fürstentums und nach 1850 des preußischen Regierungsbezirks Sigmaringen. Der Leopoldsplatz ist vom 1822/1842 erbauten Prinzenbau, dem "Deutschen Haus", dem Ständehaus und einigen Bürgerhäußern umgeben.
