Climate and Nature Experience Trail in Silz
8.5 km long forest loop, 2 km long lake loop (lake loop barrier-free)

The Silzer Lake invites you to enjoy nature and relax. At the same time, the 2 ha large lake is also a habitat for numerous fish, amphibians, birds, and insects. A sensitive natural space that needs to be protected. Especially climate change puts the small ecosystem to a tough test. Therefore, mutual consideration and careful action are particularly important.
Challenges from Climate Change:
- Water is warming too much, resulting in a decrease in oxygen content in the water, which can expose fish to significant stress or even lead to their death
- Algal blooms occur and consume additional important oxygen during decomposition
- The water volume of the flowing Klingbach is decreasing, preventing the mixing and cooling of the water. Additionally, this reduces oxygen input.
- Heavy rainfall events wash a lot of sediment from the Pfälzerwald into the lake, threatening to make it shallow over time. The water volume decreases, which contributes to faster warming.
- Deposited sediments are stirred up significantly
- Shore vegetation breaks off, and the shade-providing black alders can no longer grow. As a result, the lake increasingly occupies land and gradually becomes too large for the water volume of the Klingbach.
- Animals are disturbed, and they do not breed (especially ground-nesting birds in the shore area)
- The introduction of sunscreen and other cosmetics deteriorates water quality
