Lukerus source

In a curve of the N626 stands the solitary white church of Mackenbach. When you walk alongside the church, the cemetery and the Ourgrundiahal, you get to a simple bed with picnic table after 200m. A statue of Saint Lukerus stands atop a stone socle, hidden in the green. A source can’t be found until the end of a footpath along the Mackenbach. A type of Station of the Cross with wooden depictions of the seven Acts of Mercy such as ‘give drink to the thirsty’ lead you to the medicinal source. For centuries, worshippers with incurable eye diseases went on a pilgrimage to Saint Lukerus to wash their eyes with his sacred spring water.
