The Hammam of Ribarska Banja is a historic Ottoman bathhouse incorporated into one of Serbia’s best-known spa resorts. Built on a site with healing traditions dating back to Roman times, the hammam reflects the long continuity of thermal spa culture in the region. Today, it forms part of a modern wellness and rehabilitation complex offering therapeutic and relaxation treatments.

Archaeological discoveries indicate that the thermal springs of Ribarska Banja were already used during the Roman period, when the area functioned as a health resort known for its mineral-rich waters. During Ottoman rule, a hammam, or Turkish bathhouse, was constructed at the site, continuing the tradition of therapeutic bathing and relaxation. This surviving hammam has since been restored and incorporated into the present-day spa complex, preserving an important architectural reminder of the Ottoman influence on Serbian spa culture.

The name Ribarska Banja is traditionally associated with a fisherman, or “ribar” in Serbian, who was reputed to prepare trout dishes for visitors to the springs. Over time, the settlement developed into a major spa and rehabilitation centre known for treatments based on mineral waters and medicinal therapies. Modern facilities now include saunas, salt rooms, jacuzzis, massage treatments, fitness areas, and the restored Turkish hammam itself. Combining historical heritage with contemporary wellness services, Ribarska Banja remains one of Serbia’s notable spa destinations.

Public transport

Ribarska Banja can be reached by regional bus services from nearby Kruševac, which has wider connections to Belgrade and other Serbian cities. From Kruševac, visitors can continue to the spa by local bus, taxi, or private vehicle.

Directions

The hammam is located within the spa complex of Ribarska Banja, south-west of Kruševac near the slopes of the Jastrebac Mountains. Visitors travelling by road should follow signs towards Ribarska Banja, where the bathhouse and wellness facilities are situated within the central spa area.

Parking

Parking is available within the spa complex and along nearby access roads. Visitors generally have access to designated parking areas close to the wellness and accommodation facilities.
