Die Burgruine Waldstein, auch Rotes Schloss oder Westburg genannt, wurde von den Rittern von Sparneck im 14. Jh. gebaut. Sie sollte die Ostburg ersetzen, die nicht mehr den damaligen Ansprüchen einer wehrhaften Anlage entsprach. Im Jahre 1523 brannten die Truppen des Schwäbischen Bundes die Burg bis auf die Grundmauern nieder. Danach geriet die Anlage in Vergessenheit, bis man sie im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg (1701-1714) noch einmal als Lager benutzte. Zum Ausbau des Lagers wurden rote Ziegel verwendet, worauf der Name "Rotes Schloss" zurückzuführen ist. Heute sind nur noch die Grundmauern der Festung erhalten.
