Hoch über der Stadt Oberkirch im Renchtal, erhebt sich als markantes Wahrzeichen die Burgruine Schauenburg. Sie bietet einen herrlichen Ausblick auf die Stadt und die Rheinebene bis nach Frankreich.

Von Westen kommend, befindet sich die mächtige Burgruine Schauenburg auf der linken Seite des Taleingangs. Sie wurde von Herzog Berthold II. von Zähringen im Jahr 1060 erbaut. Die Burg ist von einem heute trockenen Wassergraben umgeben. Auf der Bergseite ist sie durch eine fast vier Meter starke Schildmauer geschützt. Große Teile davon sind erhalten, außerdem ein Brunnen und ein Keller sowie die Ruinen zweier Wohntürme.

Es ist unklar, wann genau die Schauenburg zerstört wurde. Im Jahr 1731 wurde sie urkundlich als Ruine bezeichnet und in der Folgezeit als Steinbruch verwendet. Die Familie von Schauenburg hatte sich schon viel früher im Tal niedergelassen, weil das Leben auf der Burg zu beschwerlich war.

Unterhalb dieses Wahrzeichens verläuft der "Simplicissimus-Kunstpfad".
