Az eredetileg román stílusú templomot a XIII. században gótikus stílusban átalakították. A XIV. században a szentély fölé is boltozatot építettek, melyek felett voltak a barátlakások. A szentély ebből az időből származó freskótöredékeit a XIX. században még teljes alakjukban lehetett látni.
A templom déli szomszédságában kolostor emelkedett, ami a régi, ismeretlen időkben nyom nélkül elpusztult.
Amikor hazánk nagy részében a török lett az úr, Dömölköt is elérte a végzete. A klastrom elpusztításakor a templom kegyszobrát egy bencés szerzetes titkon magához vette, és a csallóközi Dénesd templomába menekítette. Napjainkban is ott található a ma már csak romokban álló dömölki templom valahai éke.
1803-tól magtárként hasznosították, az 1930-as években műemléki védettséget kapott. A II. világháború után, 1946-ban gránátrobbanástól ledőlt az északi és a déli fal. Tornyát 1948-ban helyreállították. A mai kor az elpusztult tető helyére újat emeltetett, megóvva a tornyot a végső pusztulástól.
