Die Ruine der Höhenburg erhebt sich im östlichen Teil des Pfälzerwalds in etwa 500 m Höhe auf dem westlichen Ausläufer des Kalkofenbergs.

Man vermutet, daß die Burg Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts durch die Herren von Scharfenberg errichtet wurde.

Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts wird die Burg durch Kurfürst Friedrich I. von der Pfalz umgebaut.

Im Bauernkrieg 1525 wurde die Burg zerstört und anschließend vom Grafen von Löwenstein wieder aufgebaut.

Während des 30jährigen Krieges wurde Neuscharfeneck endgültig zerstört und seitdem nie wieder aufgebaut.

 Neuscharfeneck ist mit einer Ausdehnung von 150 auf 60 Metern eine der größten Burganlagen der Pfalz.

 Die Schildmauer ist mit einer Länge von 60 Metern, einer Höhe von 20 Metern und einer Breite von bis zu 12 Metern die mächtigste im ganzen Land.

Seit 1971 kümmert sich der Scharfeneckverein um die Ruine.
