The castle complex was built in the 13th century and served the regional ruling dynasty of the Sponheimers to protect the Nahe crossing and their possessions. From 1331 the castle served as a widow's residence for the assertive Countess Loretta of Sponheim and was probably named after her. The Frauenburg was extensively restored.
On a guided tour of the castle you can also visit the towers. Guided tours of the castle are offered.
