Altdahn liegt, zusammen mit den Ruinen Grafendahn und Tanstein, auf einem 250 langen Sandsteinfelsen, der aus 5 Blöcken besteht. Sie ist die größte und schönste der drei Burgen. Besonders interessant sind die Gänge, die tief in den Felsen getrieben wurden. Erhalten geblieben sind von Unter- und Oberburg im Prinzip nur die Grundmauern der einzelnen Bauten. Der südliche Teil der Oberburg fehlt gänzlich. Er ist 1820 bei einem Teilabriß des Sandsteinfelsen mit in die Tiefe gestürzt.
