Die Burgruine Gräfenstein, auch Merzalber Schloss genannt, wurde 1237 erstmals erwähnt und stammt vermutlich aus dem 12. Jahrhundert, aus der Zeit der Staufer. Obwohl sie im Dreißigjährigen Krieg durch einen Brand unbewohnbar wurde, sind große teile der Ruine noch erhalten- unter anderem der siebeneckige Bergfried, der einzige dieser Art in Deutschland. Er kann über eine schmale Wendeltreppe bestiegen werden.
