The Benedictine monastery of Monestir Santa Maria de Montserrat was first mentioned in a document in 888. The monastery, situated 721 metres above sea level, is a daughter foundation of the Ripoll Abbey. In 1522, it was the residence of the founder of the Jesuit Order, Ignatius of Loyola. Today, about 80 monks live there.
The centre of pilgrimage on the mountain is the Catalan national shrine, the Black Madonna „Our Lady of Montserrat“, popularly known as La Moreneta („The Brown“). It dates back to the 12th century.
The monastery houses a museum with objects on the archäology of the Holy Land, precious liturgical objects, paintings by El Greco, Caravaggio, Luca Giordano and Tiepolo, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pablo Picasso, Ramon Casas i Carbó and Salvador Dalí among others.
