The Untere Lochteich near Schlat is a small, artificially dammed forest pond - idyllically situated, with an exciting natural history, but also ecological challenges.
South-east of the village of Schlat, in the "Am Dollenhau" forest area, lies the Lower Lochteich - a quiet, tree-lined pond with an area of just under half a hectare. Created by damming the Weilerbach stream, together with the neighboring Oberer Lochteich, it forms a historic retention basin in the middle of nature. Although the lake has no known depths, its peaceful location invites you to take a short walk in the woods or linger on the shore.
Despite its idyllic appearance, the water body faces ecological challenges: The natural course of the Weilerbach is interrupted by the ponds - this not only affects the water dynamics, but also sensitive habitats. The section between the two ponds is particularly important, as this is the last known habitat of the rare stone crayfish in the surrounding FFH area.
The Lower Lochteich itself has few aquatic plants and appears to be heavily stocked with fish - both factors that have a negative impact on biodiversity. There is also no clear evidence of previous stocking with crayfish.
Despite these deficits, the Lower Lochteich remains a place with potential: for visitors interested in nature, it offers exciting insights into the interactions between humans and the environment - and perhaps also food for thought for more nature-oriented development.
