Das Kloster wurde 1146 gegründet. Nach einem Brand 1733 wurde die Kirche zur bedeutendsten Rokokokirche Österreichs umgebaut.

Das 850 Jahre alte Zisterzienserkloster prägte die Gemeinde in vielfacher Hinsicht. Für das Ansehen des Bauwerks ist das Innere ausschlaggebend. Die Wirkung beruht auf der Harmonie der überaus vielgestaltigen, farbenreichen, malerischen, figurativen, ornamentalen Ausschmückung sowie auf dem wohldurchdachten Lichteinfall.
