In the centre of Kranjska Gora, you can walk through the Park of Peace with an exhibition of photographs showing the construction of the road to Vršič during World War I.
The Park of Peace was established on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Russian Chapel under Vršič.
The Park of Peace presents the content of the events of that time on boards, and there is also an entrance map – a map of the Road to Vršič with markings of the facilities that were or were used by the army for the supply of supplies to the front line of the Battle of the Bulge. Photographs taken during the construction of the road were provided by the Austrian National Library.
The descriptions on the plaques, which were prepared by historian Marko Mugerli, are in Slovenian, English and Russian language, as the road was built mainly by Russian soldiers. He spent several days in the archives in Vienna, where he collected information on the Vršič road. The boards with descriptions are unobtrusive, but still attractive, with the help of local craftsmen who were able to design the content and place it in the park with flair.
The exhibition of fifteen boards is on display in the park opposite the Gorenjska banka in Kranjska Gora, and the photographs and descriptions follow each other in such a way that the visitor feels as if he or she is walking along the road from Kranjska Gora to Vršič and on to Trenta.
