The Mediterranean Garden of Maikammer has been in existence since May 1999. Lovingly cultivated, it documents the climate on the German Wine Route with a variety of Mediterranean plants.
Opened throughout the whole year.
Current Information:
The Mediterranean Garden is currently not in its usual state of care due to a long-term staff shortage. Therefore, certain areas may appear unkempt and differ from the usual appearance. We ask for your understanding and recommend considering this limitation when planning your visit.
Furthermore, the garden is currently difficult to access due to the renovation of the town hall.
We recommend access via Spreißelgasse.
The Mediterranean Garden is located in Maikammer on the southern side of the town hall of the municipal administration. Since May 1999, the garden has once again documented the special climatic advantages of the Southern Wine Route region. Over an area of 1,200 square meters, southern colors and scents compete for the attention of all the senses. About 500 different plant species from various regions around the Mediterranean thrive in this garden complex. Naturally, this includes well-known Mediterranean kitchen herbs and spice plants such as thyme, rosemary, sage, lavender, or the interesting caper bush. The classic trees of the south, such as the cypress, fig, pistachio, or olive tree, as well as lesser-known species like Moroccan broom, the Lebanon oak, or the Portuguese laurel cherry, make the Mediterranean Garden highly diverse. In addition, idyllic seating areas and a small pétanque court invite you to linger. The garden complex is accessible to visitors at any time.
Note: The Mediterranean Garden is not a classic ornamental garden, but a wild garden, in which the plants grow in their natural form and are allowed to develop freely. It is deliberately designed to be close to nature and conveys an impression of what Mediterranean landscapes look like – raw, vibrant, and full of diversity.
